It may be no surprise that a family famous for its over-the-top conservative attitude would not show a lot of support for same-sex marriage, but what is a shame is that the Duggar family got dangerously close to doing something cool and supportive for once and ruined it faster than Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar could conceive another child. And they seem to do that pretty fast.
It all started when the 19 Kids and Counting stars celebrated the wedding of Jessa Duggar. In addition to their large family, the Duggars are famous for restrictive rules about dating, including a strict no hand-holding until engagement policy and an even stricter no kissing until marriage policy. Jessa Duggar and her fiance Ben Seewald are said to have honored this tradition and the reserved couple decided not to kiss at the altar, but to sneak away to enjoy their first kiss in private.
Though they may have wanted the moment to themselves, the couple was quick to share it with the world after the fact, Instagramming a picture of their first kiss which was met with backlash from some even more conservative fans, who felt that the image of the couple kissing was inappropriate. Parents Michelle and Jim Bob responded to this controversy by posting a photo of themselves kissing, their pose mirroring Jessa and Ben’s, and arguing that marital love is beautiful and okay to share. “God designed marriage to be a loving, dynamic relationship between a husband and wife for a lifetime. God loves marriage and it is supposed to be full of love, joy, fun, and romance,” said the Duggars on their official Facebook page. “We had fun trying to duplicate Ben and Jessa’s happily married kissing picture. We challenge all married couples to take a happily married picture and post it here.”
We had to give props to the Duggar parents for defending their daughter’s actions, but what they didn’t count on was the response from same-sex couples. With the number of states in the U.S. with legal same-sex marriage growing, it should be no surprise that many fans of the TLC reality show would be married same-sex couples, but it seemed the Duggars were taken by surprise when many gay and lesbian couples posted photos of themselves kissing on the thread. Allegedly, they deleted all pictures of this kind.
TLC has refused to comment, and the Duggars have not directly addressed accusations that they are discriminating against same-sex couples in their campaign, but they have posted bible verses on the thread since the accusations were made, seemingly avoiding the subject.
