In a recent interview with Howard Stern, Lena Dunham, star of Girls, referred to fun. guitarist Jack Antonoff as her “life partner.” While things are clearly intensifying between the couple who just moved in together, Dunham’s choice to use this term seemed to imply that the couple are less serious than they appear and never plan to take that next step down the aisle, until Dunham clarified what she meant.
Dunham and Antonoff will not be getting married until gay marriage is legal throughout the United States. While same-sex marriage is legal in nineteen states, there are still thirty-one which have yet to legalize it, and as long as that is the case, Dunham is not holding out for a proposal.
“We’re not against marriage, but I want to wait until it’s something—my sister’s gay and it just doesn’t feel good to me to do something she can’t do,” Dunham explained. “She can do it in some places but not all places.”
It’s very sweet, really, that Dunham refuses to be a part of a system that is so conducive to discrimination until it no longer is, especially if it means that her sister is left behind.
