Charice Pempengco, who starred in the second season of Glee as “Sunshine Corazon,” was recently interviewed by Oprah Winfrey and admitted something that may come as a surprise to some. After being asked about her sexuality, Pempengco said that she considers herself a lesbian, however she went on to say that, “Basically, my soul is like male, but I’m not going to go through that stage where I change everything.” After making that statement, Pempengco stated that she is “not exactly transitioning to, like, a male-male. Basically, my soul is male, but I’m not going to go through that stage where I’m going to change everything.”
Though it is still a bit unclear as to whether or not she considers herself transgender, one thing is for sure—her physical appearance has dramatically changed. A while back, Pempengco was seen as a particularly feminine woman and wore dresses, makeup, “feminine” attire, and had long hair. However, in the interview with Oprah, she is seen wearing a button-up blouse, jeans, and boots and has a short haircut. Though clothes and haircuts do not define gender identity/orientation, she told Oprah, “I would change this. [I'll] cut my hair and wear boy clothes and everything, but that’s all.”
Regardless of what Pempengco has done in the past or what steps she will take towards feeling more at ease with her gender identity, Pempengco is inspirational because she is shedding light on something that is prevalent and important within the transgender community and other gender identities.
