Seems that Lauren Morelli head writer of Orange is the New Black (OITNB) fell into one of her stories. Morelli divorced her husband of two years and started dating one of the stars of her critically-acclaimed Netflix series show, Samira Willey, who plays Poussey. She says that she rediscovered her sexuality when writing the scenes for Piper and Alex (main characters of the show). “I found a mouthpiece for my own desires and a glimmer of what my future could look like,” she wrote in an essay entitled, “While Writing for ‘Orange is the New Black,’ I Realized I Am Gay” for Mic.
“I realized I was gay in fall 2012, one of my first days on the set. It wasn’t so much one thing, but the sum of many small details: how uncomfortable I felt around groups of lesbians or how I considered myself (shrug) a “not very sexual person.” When considered alone, these seemed like little quirks that made me me. Wanting to read a book instead of have sex is a perfectly reasonable preference to have, right? But on set, these small moments came into sharp relief, and I found myself answering to an endless stream of cast members who peppered me with questions like a gaggle of kindergartners curious about their new teacher. “Are you dating anyone?” “You’re married?” “To a man?” “But you used to kiss girls?” “Do you miss it?” I was finally forced to consider a question that had never, ever occurred to me before: Holy shit, am I gay?” she wrote in the essay.
Morelli was with husband Steve Basilone for six years, but had only been married to him for five months when she realized she was gay. The divorce from her now ex-husband has turned out amicably where in they have split their assets with Morelli keeping the Lexus and her ex-husband taking the Mazda hatchback.
Morelli and Wiley attended the Emmys together last month and have posted several pictures of themselves on social media mostly on both of their Instagram accounts. Seems that Morelli cant get enough Poussey and we clearly understand why. We applaud how Mrs Lauren Morelli managed to be brave in coming to terms with her sexuality. Good for you Mrs Morelli
“I went through it all on set: I fell in love with a woman, and I watched my life play out on screen. I encourage you to embrace your own narrative, whatever that may be. It will be worth the effort.” – Lauren Morelli
