I’ve been a fan of glee since the first season. It is one of the best television series that is gay and lesbian friendly. Not only does the show deals with issues of sexuality but also it deals with social issues and relationships. In addition to being educational, it is entertaining as well. With its great songs and choreography, the show is just basically awesome.
Issues of sexuality are always confronted and displayed through out the seasons. Let’s focus on Santana Lopez, the closet lesbian in the show, who is in love with Brittany, her best friend. Let me give you a brief description of Santana’s character. She is introduced as an antagonist alongside Quinn and Brittany as one of the three most popular cheerleaders at McKinley High school. She is seen as a stereotypical bitchy leader who remarks on her cruel attitude.
I’ve been following the budding relationship of Santana and Brittany commonly referred to as Brittanna. They were considered to be best friends through out Season One, until the episode Sectionals, when Santana said that “sex isn’t dating” and Brittany replied “If it were, Santana and I would be dating”. In here, we could assume that they are transitioning to a “friends with benefits” status.
There remained some ambiguity in the nature of their relationship until Duets, when they were shown in Brittany’s bed together making out. In the episode Sexy, Santana and Brittany admitted that they love each other more than just best friends and sang “Landslide” with Holly Holiday. Even though both seem to want to be together, Santana was afraid of the repercussions of coming out of the closet at school.
In a recent episode of Season 3, titled “I kissed a girl”, revolves around Santana and her coming out. It all began in the previous episode when Finn blackmailed her about being in the closet and coward as a retaliation to her rudeness. Unfortunately, a rival from the Congressional race overheard this and used it against Sue Sylvester. It started a dirty campaign about Sue supporting lesbians because Santana was made head cheerleader of the Cheerios. Insinuating that Sue might be lesbian herself.
As for myself, I do feel sorry for Santana about how it went with her coming out and being powerless about it. However, if we look in the brighter side, at least she is on her way in coming into terms with her sexuality. I just couldn’t wait for the next episodes that will focus more about Brittanna. For now, I just have to sit back, relax and just be the greatest TV junkie there is while I wait for something exciting that would happen in the lesbian TV world.
Here is a video clip from Glee featuring the lovely couple Brittanna. I hope you would like this.
