Just recently this week, Cate Blanchett has revealed to Variety Magazine about her not one but “many” past relationships with women while she promotes her upcoming film, Carol, which is an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Pride of Salt. Carol is a lesbian love story co-starring Rooney Mara (the gorgeous miss Lisbeth Salander from The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo who will be playing Therese). Set in 1952 in New York city, the film follows the illicit lesbian affair between a married woman and a department store clerk.
Cate was asked if playing the role was her first turn as a lesbian. She then responded coyly, “On film – or in real life?”. Pressed for details about whether she has had past relationships with women, she replied, “Yes. Many times.” (Haha, that really came to me as a surprise. I just died there. And she responded quite confidently!)
She didn’t further elaborate. Blanchett doesn’t necessarily rely on labels for sexual orientation. “I never thought about it,” she says of how she envisioned the character. “I don’t think Carol thought about it.”
The movie, Carol, will make its world premiere this weekend at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.
Here are some of the clips from the movie.
