With France’s plan of legalizing same-sex marriage starting with changing the common references to “mother” and “father” in all official documents with the word “parents” has created friction between the government and the Catholic Church which led to Pope Benedict XVI addressing his stance publicly about the issue during his speech before French Bishops last September 21, 2012.
“The family is threatened by a conception of human nature that is proven to be defective,” said the leader of the Catholic Church. “Defending the family and life in society is prophetic and anything but regressive. Marriage and the family are institutions that must be promoted and defended from every possible misrepresentation of their true nature, since whatever is harmful to them will in fact be injurious to society itself.”
With the Pope’s aggressive anti stance on the issue elicited a not so surprising response from Lady Gaga, who have been expressive of her love for the gay community.
With her unparalleled support for same-sex equality rights and her single “Born This Way” dubbed as the new “Gay National Anthem”, Lady Gaga told a French radio station (Europe 1) “What the Pope thinks of being gay does not matter to the world. It matters to the people who like the Pope and follow the Pope. It is not a reflection of all religious people.” and adds “It seems to me that gay marriage is something that is going to happen and it must happen. We are not equal and we will be only if we allow everyone to love freely. This is not what Christians believe, those who believe in something, that have a religion. It is the point of view of one person.”
This isn’t the first time the controversial singer raised a few eyebrows especially from Church leaders and such good example is after the single “Judas” music video was released, where in many religious symbols were used all throughout the video. The singer was dressed as Mary Magdalene and showed an act of putting the rosary beads in her mouth.
